For Cryptics, the summer ends in the welcoming, slightly alcoholic, embrace of Woking & Horsell. Our season-ending hosts perennially show up in various stages of decomposition as our fixture follows their annual dinner. In recent years however, their hangovers have been less spectacular and profound, which tends to mean their cricket is better and they beat us (P 19 W5 D1 L12 No result 1). This year was no exception. But having lost the toss and been invited to take the ball in the midday heat, Woking contrived to make a game of it by requiring all 11 of their players to bowl… and to bowl in a manner different to their normal form. This was either highly entertaining or humiliating depending on your allegiance.
The Grindrod brothers opened for the Cryptics and Jimbo was quickly back in the hutch for the first of three ducks in the innings. Hugs, Scotty and Keith avoided ducks but without requiring much ink from the scorer’s pen whilst Ed accumulated at the other end taking the Cryptics to 56/4 off the first 16 overs. Hardly a run rate to quicken the pulse. Ed fell grumpily for 34 in the 17th over bringing skipper Toby and Argos together at the crease. Together, they biffed a much improved 67 for the 6th wicket off almost 13 overs. Rory was followed by his elder brother Archie who smote three lusty boundaries before holing out to cover. Daddy G made it to 10 before repeating Archie’s mistake and Stu closed the innings with a repeated classic: watch one, miss one… comprehensively. Cryptics all out for 149 from a little less than 35 overs.
Woking started circumspectly Having scored in double figures off their opening overs in previous iterations of this fixture, 38/2 from the first 10 was a testament to Archie and Stu’s parsimony. Indeed the first change of Daddy G and Argos kept up the pressure such that Woking were only 2 runs ahead of the Cryptic score at the 16 over mark. Sadly, after a maiden in his 3rd over Daddy G went for 17 in his 4th and from then the end was inevitable and ultimately achieved in the 30th over. Archie was the best of the bowlers with 2 for 18 from 5 with Rory and Ed being the best of the rest with 1 for 13 and 1 for 15 respectively.
Fortunately, the early result left more time in the evening sunshine for beer and an impromptu throwing competition, which Ed Grindrod comprehensively won to the apparent delight of the club webmistress.
