With the exuberance of youth, a team full of batsmen and over 800 caps of experience and two WAGs watching from the sidelines (in the forms of Pippa plus 1, Seeckts Snr plus 1 and Bridges), skipper Toby boldly put the Follies Old Spots into the field upon winning the toss. A masterful plan in mind, what could possibly go wrong?
When, in the over after drinks it was 66 for 8, quite a lot, it would appear. But no, this was cunning plan. Field Marshall Seeckts sent the top eight out as fodder to lull the opposition into a false sense of security, before unleashing his rear guard against the change attack. His troops followed the instructions to the ‘T’.
Privates Dom (14) and Ingo(6) holed out. Sergeants Keith and Dwight edged behind without troubling the scorer, other than making him struggle to keep up with the carnage. The Field Marshall (9) took two goes to fall on his sword, Brigadier Hugs(14) did his bit by playing on. Corporal Ed(14) also edged behind and General Gossy Snr (3) somehow edged to square leg.
Time to send in the boys brigade. Goss Bros Archie and Rory turned the game around, putting on 82 for the 8th wicket. Archie (62) smashed several big sixes into Cupit’s (IYKYK) pond for consecutive half centuries, whist Rory (21) tucked several nice fours behind square. Cryptic highest scores and medals for both.
There was just time to send in the Dad’s Army Warden with Grinders Senior (12no) extending his average at number 11 to 122 by running out Rory.
Follies’ second mistake was to fail to note that an army marches on it stomachs and a hearty tea of burgers and cakes was downed.
Part 3 of the plan. Let Gossy Senior tear down the hill and send Grinders uphill and into the breeze. The contrasting missiles and spud gun approach seemed to work and early inroads were made. Gossy bowled unchanged to snaffle 3-38. The art of deception continued with the spinner, Rory, brought onto to replace seamer Grinders and bowl quicker balls. Archie replaced his dad and after taking of couple of balls to get his sights aligned bowled with some serious pace. Two wickets were his reward, including a spectacular one handed juggle and grab by Keith at slip.
All this time young Griffths was making batting look easy at the other end and was set fair for a second consecutive century against us, before a returning Grinders left him bamboozled with his moon ball. Dwighty wrapped up the tail with a quick fire double, including another catch by Keith meaning he caught more catches than balls he faced.
We love it when a plan comes together.
