With the World Cup Final looming, Gossy heroically engineered a 1pm start so everyone could sprint home for the 8pm kick‑off. A 35‑over match should’ve been a breeze. Unfortunately, Crondall got through their overs at a pace normally reserved for tectonic plates, tea taken after nearly three hours. England’s Test side would’ve blushed.
The Cryptics opened with a new partnership of Ingo Snr and Bridges. The baying crowd on the boundary rope were hopeful of a possible home relocation for Ricky, but disappointingly, Bridges was swinging his bat, hunting a quick 10, before falling in the 4th over with 24 runs on the board.
Debutant Dan Smith joined Ingo, and things looked promising until Harvey decided to remind everyone he was umpiring and gave Ingo LBW. We move on.
Toby arrived at 39–2 and, with Dan, rebuilt nicely. Dan made a tidy 20 before being bowled, leaving Toby to continue the sensible batting while Roland arrived and attempted to hit the ball at least once per over. Toby reached 51 and retired to be replaced by another leftie in Scottie, enthusing as ever while Roland continued his interpretive dance with the bat, somehow accumulating a career‑best 45 — mostly assisted by generous byes and cosmic luck.
Arthur Cooke, another debutant, barely had time to breathe before Scottie smashed yet another boundary to reach 53 and retire. Ingo Jnr joined Arthur, who did well until he was bowled for 11 on the second‑to‑last ball. Harvey survived the final delivery, meaning both he and Ingo Jnr heroically protected their averages with unbeaten zeros.
Crypos went to tea pleased with a hefty 253, a whopping 47 of which were extras.
Harvey and Stu opened the bowling well, keeping things tight. Harvey struck first thanks to Dan’s catch at mid‑wicket. Stu then definitely had a catch behind, but umpire Seeckts Snr — apparently operating without the sense of hearing — gave nothing. (Wrongly thought they might share our walking ethos – ed). Someone from Saltburn was probably clicking their fingers again.
Ingo Jnr bowled spin due to a dodgy back and still managed a sharp caught‑and‑bowled. Sadly, his back allowed only one more over.
Then came debutant Izzi Scott, who immediately proved she’s the best bowler in her family. In her second over she took two wickets — Toby catching one at mid‑wicket and Ingo Sr taking one behind the stumps. She finished with an excellent 5 overs, 29 runs, 2 wickets. A very proud Dad was spotted in the field with a tear in his eye knowing that his bowling career was over.
Crondall, at 110–4 after 20 overs, decided chasing 253 was far too much like hard work. Bridges and Dan tried to finish the job, but the batsmen dug in for a ‘Crondall draw’. Bridges managed to snaffle a single wicket though with Arthur taking a catch at mid off.
They closed tamely on 161 for 5.
